Melatonin Shown to Help Reduce Tinnitus in Men

Friday, November 4th, 2011

A double blind study conducted out of Ohio State Univ. showed that melatonin helped to reduce ringing in the ears (tinnitus) in men. Actually, the study was done in both men and women, and was a double blind cross-over study, which means neither the researchers or the patients knew what they were receiving (melatonin or placebo), and then after receiving one “unknown treatment” for 30 days (and 30 days of waiting inbetween), they received the other tablet (either the melatonin or placebo).

The study showed that men (more so than women) had improvement in tinnitus symptoms and sleep by taking 3 mg of melatonin. The melatonin was most effective in men with bilaterral tinnitus most likely associated with noise exposure, who had no prior treatment for tinnitus, and who did not suffer with depression.
